ROLE AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATION OF NURSES IN DEALING WITH SPINAL
MUSCULAR ATROPHY PATIENTS.
Nurses have various roles in the world today. Some of these roles are general, while
the rest are specific for certain conditions and certain types of patients. Similarly, nurses play
a significant role in the lives of patients diagnosed with Spinal muscular atrophy. Like it is
well known, spinal muscular atrophy is an inherited disorder that affects the muscles, thus
making people have difficulties in activities like moving, talking, and swallowing (Wirth,
2021).
Therefore, the nurses help diagnose the children and patients who are brought to the
hospital with this disorder. The nurses are also in charge of administering the physical
therapy treatment method (Jesmi, 2019). This is because they are the people who have the
adequate training to deliver this to the patients. The nurses also recommend appropriate
devices and tools like wheelchairs for the affected individuals. We should also not forget that
the treatment of this disorder involves the prescription of various drugs, which are closely
monitored by the nurses periodically. Nurses are similarly crucial in tracking the progression
of the Spinal muscular atrophy patient’s health improvements and recording the progress and
signs.
The nurses also have a role in maintaining ethical considerations in dealing with
spinal muscular atrophy patients. Many people who are never aware thus are ignorant may
laugh at the patients due to their inability to talk or walk properly. Therefore, it is the
responsibility of the nurses to boost the morale of these patients and avoid such scenarios.
The nurses must not harm these patients, whom many people deem unfit in society (Haddad,
2018). Moreover, the nurses should only perform relevant operations or tests on the patients
with their consent, no matter what they deem best for the very patients.
