What are some differences between training and development? What development approaches
and methods can managers use? Which methods are most effective in your opinion?
Training is a term process and development is long term process. Training is specifically related
for job purpose whereas development is for general knowledge purpose. Training is provided to
non-managerial personnel and development is provided to managerial personnel. Training is all
about instructions related to technical and mechanical problems, while development is related to
philosophical and theoretical concepts of education.
Various development approaches and methods used by managers are class room lecture method,
group discussion method, role playing method, case study method, vestibule training method,
apprenticeship training method, etc.
The most effective method of development varies from person to person, in my opinion is role
playing method because trainees will get to know various roles to be performed in different kinds
of situations.
