The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a group cognitive behavioral
program on self-esteem, depression, and interpersonal relations among undergraduate students.
The study used a sample of 37 undergraduate students attending K University at Changwon,
South Korea. A pretest-post-test non-equivalent group design was used to explore the impacts of
the developed group cognitive behavioral intervention in enhancing the mental health of
undergraduate students. The hypotheses of the study comprised of 1) the group cognitive
behavioral program had a positive effect on the depression levels of the undergraduate students,
2) the group cognitive behavioral program had a positive effect on the self-esteem of
undergraduate students, and 3) the group cognitive behavioral program had a positive effect on
the student’s interpersonal relation skills. In general, the study concluded that the group
cognitive behavioral program had a positive impact on the depression levels of the students,
where the program significantly decreased the depression scores and significantly increased the
interpersonal relations and self-esteem of the study participants.
A quantitative research methodology was used for data collection and analysis. Data on
depression was collected based on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale, consisting of 21
items graded on a 4-point Likert scale. The internal consistency of the BDI items used in the
study had a Cronbach’s α of 0.81. Data on self-esteem was also collected and measured based on
the Korean Version of self-esteem, which consists of 10 items rated on a 4-point Likert scale.
The data on self-esteem collected had a Cronbach’s α of 0.88, which shows that the data had an
