SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION IN THE UNITED STATES
2
Introduction
Substance use has been a huge part of our communities in today’ s society. For some, if not
most, legal substances such as marijuana (legal in most states not all), alcohol, etc. are a very
profitable lucrative form of income as well as a high source of revenue for the united states.
There have been many programs implemented throughout the united states to help those who are
currently struggling with substance use. In this paper I will go into detail on two prevention
programs that have been beneficial to the community and employers.
Substance Use Prevention Programs
One of the prevention programs I would like to discuss is the military prevention program. The
military is an organization that was formed to defend, protect, and serve the people of the united
states using any form of tactics to complete and serve their purpose. There are multiple different
occupations that you can be while serving the military. Examples being a doctor, a nurse, etc.
(BLS, 2018). Members who serve in the military also struggle with substance abuse. The
military has a zero-tolerance policy against the abuse of substance use. Even though they may
have a policy against it, doesn’t mean that members are abiding by that policy. Due to high stress
levels weather caused through deployment or grief/ trauma, military members will drink
consistently non-stop to help them cope with whatever adversities they may be facing. Substance
use in the military might not seem as severe as the outbreaks in the united states, however it is
just as important. It's important because when they can go home, the known substances are easily
attainable. Due to the trauma and PTSD and other adversities that military members face, having
a program put in place while serving can make more of a positive impact in the long run
especially when their families can be affected by the substance abuse (BLS, 2018).
