STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
Fall Term 2013
Introduction
Welcome to ENGR 0022: Structure and Properties of Materials. The vast arrays of materials
used in modern engineering are almost entirely synthetic and must be processed from raw
materials. Materials engineers have manipulated the structure of these materials to give them
desirable properties for specific applications. It is important that all engineers understand basic
structure-property relationships of materials if they are to appreciate the role they play in both
design and manufacture.

Course Description
This is a survey course that introduces the structure-property relationships of different material
classes. This is done using the material selection process and the software developed by Granta
Design. Although the software will be used in some class problems the objective of the course is
to introduce structure-property relationships of materials in the context of design. The emphasis
will be on materials used in mechanical design.
Text
“Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing, and Design” by Ashby, Shercliff, and Cebon;
Elsevier 2009, 2nd Edition. Along with the text we will use an accompanying software
package (CES Edupack software). The CES program will be given to you on a DVD. You can
transfer it to your personal computer. The CES software is also available on the computers in
BH 309 and 318.
It is important to understand that you are expected to take notes in class from which you can
study for the exams with the assistance of the textbook. While the course will attempt to use the
text as much as possible, there will be additional material and different emphasis in some aspects
of the class presentation.
