Apart from British English and American English, there are also other varieties of English,
such as Australian English, which is mainly used in Australia. The accent used in Australian
English is popular for its vowel sounds, the use of an intonation at the end of a sentence, and
the lack of strong “r” pronunciation (ABC Education, 2019). This makes statement sound as
if they are questions. The sounds of the vowels is the most unique feature of the Australian
English. Yet, it is based on the British spelling, although differences occur in how some of

Varieties of the English language and its impact on the teaching of English are essential in the
21st century. Teaching the English language is crucial because English is the most widely
spoken language (Yu, 2018). The English language is also used as an official language in
multiple countries. English language is uniform but has variations in spelling present between
British English and American English. Teaching the English language helps learners improve
their communication skills (I. Nurhamidah & S. Purwanto, 2021). Individuals with enhanced
communication skills can express their ideas in a better way. Textbooks are essential in
English training because they guide teachers and ensure a systematic program is followed in
teaching the English language.
