How many times have we had to attend a "team activity" at work and dreaded the prospect? Is it
because we felt it was going to be the same old thing as last year or that we don't see any change
afterwards?
In his article, "Quick activities to improve your team: How to run a successful team-building
activity", Mr. Miller discusses these very topics as he highlights the good and bad of team
building activities.
For the Module 1 SLP, please read Mr. Miller's article. After reading it, please write a 2-3 page
paper that addresses the following topics:

1. Identify and discuss the steps before, during, and after the activity. Which group of
activities do you feel are more important than the others? Why?
The goal of team activities is to build a rapport and team synergy amongst group
members; when this is accomplished, it is at this point wherein and organization or ‘team’ can
furnish success and the members of the team are less likely to dread the prospect of team
activities. Miller discusses in great detail the steps that should be taken before, during, and after
an activity to ensure that team exercises are in fact effective.
Prior to the inauguration of an activity it is most important to select an appropriate
activity for the team. It is during this phase that the objective of the team activity be clearly
stated; “The best team-building activity can become the worst team-building experience when
there is no clear objective” (Miller, 2007). In conjunction with the clear assimilation and
expression of what the team’s objective should be as a result of the team activity, it should also
be ensured, prior to the carrying out of any types of activities that the objective and goals set
forth are attainable, relevant and something that should be reinforced long after the activity has
concluded. An example of this might be an objective of ensuring that each team member is able
to meet a certain sales quota for a specific period; this will provide motivation to the individual
employees while also continuing to be something that can be reinforced and advantageous to the
organization over an extended period of time.
The second step that should be conducted in any team activity is the appropriate
preparation for the team building activity. As the team leader it will be important to understand
how the exercise should be carried out and what is expected. If this does not occur the activity
will be chaotic and frustrating. If time is not on your side in respect to planning and preparing for
the activity there should still be some amount of time, however small, spent reviewing the
