Differences in group and individual communication
Communication can be described as the means by which individuals disperse and
transmit meaning in an effort to generate mutual comprehension. This procedure necessitates an
immense collection of proficiency in “intrapersonal” and “interpersonal” practicing, paying
attention, scrutinizing, vocalizations, inquiry, evaluation, and assessments. Implementation of
these practices can be transmitted to every aspect of life. Via communication, teamwork and
collaboration are allowed to take place. If there is a singular uniting subject matter which
traverses every field, it is the exchange and transmission of ideas in an informative manner.
Communication is the interface to fundamental literacy and intellectual distinction.
Communication is an important cornerstone of all groups, and often the variable,
which determines their success or failure. Effective communication builds trust
and mutual respect and facilitates learning. Although communication is frequently
thought of in terms of written or oral dialogue, actions are also important forms of
communication and indicate commitment to stated agreements. (Department of
Primary Industries, 2001).
Due to the fact that the opinions and thoughts of individuals vary the connotations in
individual and group communication can fluctuate. It is of fundamental importance to recognize
this fact as it certainly has an affect on communication. If an individual communicates
information to an individual or group, the receiver is required to understand the information in
the way it was intended. It is consequently imperative to request opinions, in order to compare
assessments in order to arrive at a common understanding. It should then be ensured that the
communication transmitted is the communication that has been received.
Group communication can be a difficult skill to learn due to the fact that there are
numerous members, who may have differing views and opinions on the subject at hand. This
should be taken into consideration and duly noted. There is always the chance of disagreements
and therefore, the opinions of others should be taken in stride if they are not in agreement with

the majority. While this is also true in regards to individual communication, the task of settling
disagreements and making decisions becomes much easier due to the fact that there are only 2
individuals involved, making the process more straightforward and much simpler.
Group communication has the capacity to offer a variety of ideas and collective
knowledge to the issue at hand. This type of communication can be used to solve problems and
issues relating to various subjects in numerous ways due to the combined efforts of those in the
group. Individual communication is on a much more personal level and may be used to solve
personal problems as opposed to community or business-related problems.
In conclusion, each type of communication involves specific skills which must be used in
order to effectively transmit thoughts and ideas. Group communication entails the ability to
successfully take all opinions into account while keeping order in the group among members.
The avoidance of argumentative statements and actions should be high priority and necessitates a
strong leader who can keep order to maintain a positive outlook among members. Individual
communication should include the ability to understand verbal communication as well as non-
verbal communication in order to successfully understand ideas that are exchanged between
sender and receiver. In general, the art of effective communication is a useful tool in solving and
resolving issues of importance whether on an individual or group setting.
Dispute Resolution
One of the main Learning Team goals is to work on team collaboration through effective
communication. This is relevant because to achieve these goals, it is necessary to have a
sufficient amount of information dedicated to dispute resolution. To overcome conflict obstacles
effectively, it is essential to provide more detailed information on dispute resolution. The
Learning Team Charter is especially effective if the team uses each section as a guide for dispute
resolution. Sections such as ground rules, Learning Team goals, and team member skill inventory

all have a major impact on how to go about resolving a conflict. Each of the other sections in the
Learning Team Charter has valid information that relates to effective conflict resolution.
The section in the Charter on dispute resolution contains good information regarding
potential conflicts that may arise between team members. Porter (2004) stated, “In a Learning
Team situation, conflict can arise when the original agreement to work together does not address
enough specifics about exactly how and when team members will accomplish individual tasks”
(p. 1). The one aspect that the conflict resolution section of the Charter lacks is the detail on
specific strategies to prevent conflict. The specific strategies are important to consider because
they will have a positive impact on the Learning Team collaboration. The following paragraph
will highlight effective strategies that the dispute resolution section of the Charter should
include. Discussed next are effective strategies in dispute resolution.
In today’s business environment, teams represent the way work is accomplished. The
most common reason teams fail to meet performance expectations is due to group conflict.
The potential for conflict in developing projects that use interdependency, as a way to achieve
results is extremely high. Because it involves individuals from different backgrounds and
orientations working together to complete a common task, the cause of conflict can stem from a
variety of sources. This includes differences in values, attitudes, needs, expectations,
perceptions, resources, and personalities. Thus, this is the most obvious downside to a team
atmosphere (Gountanis, 2008).
No matter how much planning goes into group preparation, things can and do go awry.
There need to be rules to overcome the conflict that such a process brings.
Effective Strategies in Dispute Resolution
The first strategy to include that will provide positive results in conflict resolution is for
the team to address issues as they arise, which is essential to focus on in conflict resolution. If a
