Controlling Communicable Diseases
The control of communicable diseases should be given more priority than individual
rights for the common good of people. The role of community health is to ensure that
communities are protected from infections and other hazards that may have far-reaching
effects on communities. Some of the freedoms of people that may have to be traded for the
control of communicable illnesses include the freedom of move and assembly. Policies need
to be made for the greater good. Therefore, the rationale of limiting the freedoms of people
during communicable diseases is to ensure that diseases are controlled so that the effects are
limited and normalcy resumes. For instance, COVID-19 is very infectious. Therefore,
people’s freedom to move and travel was restricted to limit chances of infections surging
considering the limited healthcare resources and the adverse effects of the illness on the
economy and other aspects.
The boards of health have the role of implementing measures to improve health
outcomes. For instance, during the COVID-19, boards have been important in determining
the restrictions to be used to prevent infections. For instance, boards suggested and
implemented measures like statewide lockdowns at the height of infections to protect citizens
from infections from other places. The boards also offered guidelines and public health
education to empower people to protect themselves (Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
2021). The boards also offer information on vaccinations and other important data that may
be needed for people to decide.
