[SURNAME] 1 Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin Name: Course: Date: Analysis Sonny’s Blues is a story set in Harlem, New York City in the years after Harlem Renaissance. The story revolves around two brothers who have a broken relationship amidst the pressures of life and suffering in the impoverished African-American neighborhood in the city characters (Steven, 2015 pg. 45). The narrator, is Sonny’s elder brother and the protagonist in the story and after the death of both of their parents, was supposed to look after his brother. Conflict Through the narrator’s eyes, we get to Sonny as of a quiet and introspective character who likes to withdraw to himself, has a passion in Jazz music and is battling heroin addiction for which he has once been sent to jail. The core conflict is between the protagonist and his younger brother as they seem so distant from one another. The narrator is a family man and a school teacher who doesn’t seem to get the reason for Sonny’s passion for music and his drug addiction.
