In many cases, a sentence can involve a fine, imprisonment or other punishments towards defendant who has been convicted of committing a particular crime. The people who have been imprisoned for committing several crimes will face the consecutive sentence. The sentencing of an offender is meant to defend the society from crimes. Different statutes have specified the penalties that should be imposed on various offenses that are committed guidelines of sentencing regulate the level of punishment given to a certain form of offense. However, some prosecutors and jurisdictions have been given the power of determining the level of punishment that a certain offense should be accorded. For a long time, it has been argued that legislators have the incentive of trying to enact sentences that are tougher which will be applied to any typical defendant (Hester, 2016). Application of inadequate sentencing helps in the formation of a range of egregious crimes that have been made to fall on legislators, and excessive punishment blames usually fall on prosecutors.
