The Evolving ePatient
What electronic communication strategies are used at your organization to communicate
with patients?
In my healthcare organization, nurses are increasingly using different communication
strategies and platforms to communicate with patients and other health care teams. Some of the
communication devices that are currently used include smartphones, monitoring equipment, bar-
coding scanners, and tablets (Hessels, et al., 2015). Communication accomplished using the
gadgets mentioned above includes emailing, text messaging, and direct verbal communication.
Most of these communication strategies are instrumental in accessing medical records and
obtaining patient care information (Jha, 2010). In some cases, they are used to document nursing
care.
Nurses are able to access healthcare information through clinical practice guidelines and
online references. Additionally, they can access lab test results, access patient records, and place
orders electronically through integrated electronic medical systems (Hessels, et al., 2015).
Electronic communication in the healthcare facility is mainly perceived as effective, safe, and
efficient (Hessels, et al., 2015). Most healthcare practitioners, including the nurses, report that
eHealth, which mainly describes web-based or internet activities, is instrumental in saving
patients’ time, especially during the treatment process. Apart from that, electronic
communication strategies are vital in improving patient satisfaction.
Based on your organization’s HIPAA policy, how are patient privacy and confidentiality
protected?
