What is one bad idea or misconception about writing that you feel has harmed you in some way? Where
did that idea come from? How has it affected you? How would you like to "fight back" to change this idea
and its impact on your life?
Answer:
Writing gives voice to your thoughts and feelings. Writing should not be judged in a certain way to
determine whether one is a writer or not.
In my opinion, a common misconception about writing is that you cannot learn to be a writer and you
must be born with it. Almost no writer has ever published their first draft. They all went through series of
hits and misses along the way. I am a creative writer who writes for myself and to help others. My writing
is more personal when I include images to represent concepts visually and follow no to minimal formal
writing processes. It is very restrictive to follow any kind of writing process. It is always gratifying to
make the writing your own while meeting the requirements of the topic.
The idea that best authors are chosen stems from our own beliefs that struggling writers are inferior to
exceptional writers or authors. When struggling writers consider themselves to be artists, they get
frustrated because they cannot make their writing look like what they think art should be like, and they
have no idea where to begin to become the brilliant, world-class writers they expect teachers and readers
to think they are.
I would like to fight back by stating that a person who reads and writes can be a writer, since writing is a
discovery process that can be mastered by practice. I believe anyone can be a writer who engages in good
writing regimes every day, such as daily reading and writing.
