The organization was founded in 1996 by David Stern (WNBA, 2018). Mr. Stern founded the women’s league as an equivalent of men's National Basketball Association (NBA). The organization currently has 12 teams playing (WNBA, 2018). WNBA currently organizes games only in America. Since its role is to organize women basketball games, the organization has to attract fans who will watch its games. A key way that the WNBA makes money is by selling tickets to its basketball games. Increasing its number of supporters will help increase the organization’s revenue. Two key larger goals of the WNBA are to increase the popularity of women’s basketball games and to add more teams to its league (Aman, n.d.). Marketing is key to achieving the larger goals. Social media platforms have given sporting organizations a huge opportunity to attract and retain supporters. The WNBA has seized on this opportunity.
