According to the National Research Council, 40 percent of high school children are consistently disengaged and inattentive in the classroom. Motivating high school graduates can be difficult as they tend to disconnect during these ages (Ruis, 2012). Motivation can be: intrinsic and or extrinsic (Intrinsic motivation, Extrinsic motivation). Both types of motivation are compelling and can be utilised to create positive results in Eric’s career development. Intrinsic motivation comes from within every individual. If a person enjoys an activity, they are more likely to do it as opposed to something that they do not like, for example, Eric’s interest in video games. I would, therefore, use intrinsic motivation to help Eric develop a career plan. Examples include encouraging him to participate in job shadowing opportunities, exploratory classes and visiting business premises. Most companies are willing to help young people. Job shadowing will give him a chance to see details about different careers and also ask professionals direct questions. It would also allow him to see the world outside of a textbook, get feedback on his resume, gain networking contacts and gain valuable work experience that can be included on his resume (Job Shadowing).
