Course Task 2: Journal articles on the advancement in treatment of Degenerative disorders
Introduction
Degenerative disorders are diseases that affect the central nervous system and peripheral
nervous system. Depending on the site affected, the neuronal loss, gliosis or demyelination can lead to
motor deficits, behavioral disturbances and cognitive decline. This can be serious or life-threatening
disease. It depends on the type and most of them have no cure. Treatments may help improve
symptoms, relieve pain, and increase mobility. This article intends to review the advantageous role of
plants and secondary metabolites in the prevention and management of degenerative disorders.
Method
Researchers directed a PubMed rummage for the studies issued in the middle of 2014 and 2019
utilizing various combination of words, including the accompanying:
Normal mixtures
Flavonoids
Bioflavonoid
Neuroprotection
Neurodegenerative illnesses
Parkinson's sickness
Alzheimer's infection
The review included only the relevant studies on the topic that used in vitro or in vivo models of AD
and PD.
Result and Discussion
Many medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites are affirmed with the ability to alleviate
the symptoms of degenerative disorders. The most important mechanisms identified, through which
phytochemicals exert their neuroprotective effects and potential maintenance of neurological health in
ageing, include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antiapoptotic, acetylcholinesterase and
monoamine oxidase inhibition and neurotrophic activities.
