Maternal Health Policies
Maternal health is vital in ensuring a healthy society. Therefore, maternal health
policies help ensure that babies are born healthy and lower rates of mortality and morbidity.
In the US, maternal health is among the areas of focus. Several regulations aim to improve
outcomes among pregnant women and new mothers. However, CDC says that about 700
women die yearly from yearly and half are preventable. Therefore, clearly, improvements can
be made to the current policies. The US and the WHO definitions of maternal mortality are
different. While the WHO defines it as death when pregnant or in the Last 42 days of the
pregnancy, the US defines it as death during or one after pregnancy (Feltner et al., 2018).
Therefore, policies and measures differ based on the definition.
The Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2018 is the main policy that protects women
and therefore combats maternal mortality. The law requires that data be collected and be used
to inform future decisions. The law also mandated the Maternal mortality review committees
(MMRCs) and requires that they analyze information and recommend solutions to protect
women (Villavicencio, McHugh & Edmonds, 2020). The reporting also has to be standard to
ensure that data is interpreted accurately. The Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System
collects information on maternal deaths so that progress can be evaluated. Another important
issue that the US focuses on is improving care access to women. Medicaid offers coverage to
poor women to ensure they can access care and prevent adverse outcomes. Medicaid covers
about 40% of all women (Villavicencio, McHugh & Edmonds, 2020).
Outside the US, the countries also offer insurance coverage for pregnant women.
Developed countries provide universal care to ensure that pregnant women and new mothers
can access care and prevent maternal deaths. Such countries include the UK and Switzerland.
Most maternal mortalities happen in developing countries. 99% happen in developing
countries (Villavicencio, McHugh & Edmonds, 2020).
