One tactic that he used was selective perception which is “filtering out information to suit our own needs”. (Carpenter, 2011, p281) Most of Mr. Ebbers wealth was in WorldCom Stock thus he filtered out reports on declining sales in telecom services and equipment. (Crawford, 2005) This Filtering of communication on sales painted the picture to the rest of the company that they have been doing well. Filtering occurred when Mr. Ebbers refused to release information about the declining sales. If he decided to not to filter the information it could invoke outrage for the potential unethical or illegal activity occurring. Again, he was worried about his personal wealth and made decisions for his personal gain instead of proper decision for the company’s health. Shuffling the books by manipulating financial data falls into this category. WorldCom attempted to falsely inflate the earnings on its profit and loss statements by nearly four billion (Kennon, J. 2020). The CEO Bernard Ebbers and the CFO Scott Sullivan acted in an unethical manner, which ultimately ruined the life savings of thousands of investors. Businesses should institute a system of checks and balances to prevent and detect fraud. Any CEO must have a clear understanding of company plans and goals. At the company I work for, we have internal and external audits during the year. The internal review usually focuses on business practices and risks, while the outside audit firm goes over our financial records. WorldCom's first barrier in communication, in this case, was filtering, "the distortion or withholding of information to manage a person's reactions" (Carpenter, M., 2013). This communication barrier prevents getting a clear picture of what is occurring. In Mr. Ebbers's case, he was one of the masterminds behind the accounting scandal that ended up bankrupting the company. Scott Sullivan testified that on one occasion in 2000, Mr. Ebbers advised Sullivan to book improper account entries to increase revenue and obscure costs (Teather, D. 2005). Sullivan advised there were two sets of books, one reflecting the accurate financial status and the second one for wall Street. Ebber's knowingly misrepresented the actual financial state of the company, which led Wall Street and investors to believe the company was financially sound. The second communication barrier was selective perceptions, which refers to filtering information to suit our own needs (Carpenter, M., 2013). After reading the article and others like it, I believe Mr. Ebbers was fully aware of Mr. Sullivan's actions in the mishandling of the books. He felt that since he was not performing the steps, then he would not be criminally responsible for the outcome. Mr. Ebbers filtered his knowledge of the accounting scam without concern for anyone outside of himself (Crawford, 2005). The direct benefits that Mr. Ebbers received in WorldCom stock and four hundred million in loans allowed for the mismanagement to grow into an eleven billion-dollar accounting fraud (Crawford, 2005). Mr. Ebbers resigned just before the scandal went public; his exit left the appearance that the company was stable, which he used in his defense that he was utterly unaware (Crawford, 2005). In the end, Mr. Ebbers claims that "letting much of the minutiae of running the company to underlings" (Crawford, 2005) was just part of his attempt to deflect attention from his involvement. Indeed he was running a busy company, but a CEO is at the helm; managing and overseeing roles is his charge.
