Discussion Question Governors & Executives
With the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen many issues surging in politics,
with the recall election for Governor Newsome of California State. First of all, the issues at stake
here for the proponents (Republicans) of the recall effort were predisposed on the Corona Virus
pandemic regarding Newsom’s dining mask free at a public event. While at the same time, he
recalled and urged people to mask up and maintain social distancing. However, the main petition
by the proponents is based on homelessness and high taxes in the State.
The recall ended to the ballot legally after the federal judges approved the petition and
called the petitioners for the public signatures, which were later met after Newsom’s dining
mask-free in public. Consequently, the French Laundry incident of Governor Newsom was put
first on the list of reasons to remove him. Conferring to Breuninger (2021), the recall attempts
was constitutionally right since the signatures from the public were met.
Conferring to NPR (2021), with 58 counties in the State and the general votes already
mapped and cast, the majority of counties from the west voted ‘Yes.Alternatively, those from
the east voted ‘No.’ Conclusively, the main reason I can state on why Governor Newsom won
the recall election is because of the lack of stance in the petition. The main issues raised in the
first petition before the French Laundry incident of the Governor were altered. Also, the
democrats couldn’t afford to lose control of the U.S senate. It proved a lack of stance by the
proponents led by the petitioners.
