Self-labeling heralds feelings of trying to fit in. Lesbians may grieve for lost social approval but they may, regardless, readjust to certain life tasks such as having children through adoption or donor insemination. Lesbians will then develop a more positive outlook and develop a sense of identity. However, even though this model captures the experience of most lesbians, it is not universal. Some lesbians may not be threatened by their sexuality as society is more receptive these days. The assumed endpoint of stable identity may not be universal as some lesbians may change their sexual orientation. Although concealment of sexual orientation has been correlated with negative health outcomes, it is possible to have a positive identity without disclosure to the community, as is the case, especially with some ethnic or religious types.
