Neoliberalism refers to policies that support deregulation, free-market and reduction
in the spending of a government. Neoliberalism has been linked to austerity policies and
efforts to minimize deficits in the budget by reducing government spending on social
projects. Neoliberal environmentalism involves the commodification and privatization of
property resources like water, forests which are either state-owned, un-owned or commonly
owned. It involves deregulation and a reduction in public expenditure for the purpose of
environmental management. Neoliberalism results to the degradation of the environment and
accumulation of capital by dispossession as individuals and communities have limited access
to their resources. Examples of neoliberal environmentalism activities include mining and
deforestation and these have adverse effects on the environment. Leanne Simpson, an
indigenous academic, and a supporter of the Idle No More movement, criticizes extractivism
due to the negative effects it has on the environment. Leanne believes that people have to
stand up and fight every time the land of their nation is being threatened through activities
such as deforestation, mining prospects, pipelines, condo development among others
(Simpson & Klein 2017). Leanne believes that everything the nation has including political
systems, intellectual systems, food security and healthcare come from the land. Simpson
notes that in the early times, people did not resist colonialism but today, people are pushing to
protect their cultures, land, languages and nationhood. Indigenous people witnessed
environmental collapse like for instance, salmon extinction in Lake Ontario and buffalo
extermination in Cree. These damages to the environment are both unnecessary and
distressing. Leanne labels extraction as stealing. The action of taking without permission,
without caring or acknowledging the probable impacts on other living things being supported
by the environment (Simpson & Klein 2017). According to her, extraction will eventually
lead to unsustainable societies. She maintains that damaging the environment could mean the
