Austin Rudd
3rd Period
Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau Austria. His father, Alois Hitler was
married to his third wife, Klara Hitler. Hitler had five siblings, three of which were from his
fathers' previous marriages. However, only Adolf and a younger sister, Paula survived to
become adults. His mother, Klara Hitler was a kind and gentle woman. His father was a
intelligent and ambitious man. Alois wanted his son to do well in life. Alois was a strict father
and would brutally beat his son if he did not do what he was told. His other son, from his
previous marriage was a big disappointment to him and eventually ended up in jail for theft.
Hitler was a deeply religious child whom was popular among his pupils and had a bright
academic future. Hitler was already admired for his leadership qualities in primary school.
Secondary school proved to be much different than primary school. He was no longer at the
top of his class, his only reaction was to stop trying. He also lost his popularity among his
pupils. They no longer accepted him as one of their leaders. Art was one of Hitlers main
interest at school. His father was furious when his son told him he wouldn't be joing the civil
services, instead he was going to be an artist. Hitlers relationship with his father disappeared.
At thirteen years old, his father died in 1903. At the age of fifteen after doing so poorly on his
exams he was told he would have to repeat the entire school year again. Hitler hated school
and convienced his mother to allow him to leave school without a secondary education. When
he was eighteen Hitler recieved an inheritance from his fathers will. With this money he moved
to Vienna with the intentions to become an art student. However with the rejection from Vienna

Academy of Art and Vienna School of Architecture left Hitler humiliated. He never brought
himself to tell his mother and continued living in Vienna pretending he was an art student. In
1907 his mother died from cancer. This affected him deeply. He had the fondest memories of
his mother and carried her pictures everywhere he went. It was even claimed that he had her
picture in his hand when he died in 1945. In 1909 Hitler ignored his call-up papers for military
service. He was unwilling to serve Austria. With the outbreak of the First World War, Hitler
joined the German Army. He enjoyed it very much; apart of a group that was fighting for a
common goal. He didn't mind risking his life and liked the excitement of fighting in a war. Hitler
won five medals during the First World War, including the Iron Cross. In October 1918, while
recovering in a military hospital after being blinded in a Britsih mustard gas attack, Germany
surrendered. Hitler went into a state of deep depression. Hitler saw socialism as part of a
Jewish conspiracy. In May 1919, the German Army entered Munich and overthrew the
Bavarian Socialist Republic. After being arrested with other soldiers, he was accused of being
a socialist. After excaping execution Hitler supplied informaion to help track down soldiers
involved in the uprising. Hitler was then recruited as a political officer. Hitler felt a sense of
failure due to the terms of the Versailles Treaty. The German Army began using Hitler as a spy.
Hitler became the fifthy-fourth person to join the German Worker's Party. Hitler was often the
main speaker at the GWP meetings. In 1920, under Hitler's direction the party adopted the
swastika and changed it's name to the National Socialist (Nazi) Party. The partys' platform
called for the removal of civil rights for Jews and for their expulsion from Germany. In July
1921, Hitler becomes the leader of the Nazi Party. On November 8, 1921 Hitler was arrested
for treason. He was sentenced to five years in jail. It was at this time that he began writing
Mein Kampf. In 1938, Hitler is named Time magazine's person of the year. By the beginning
