Nursing and Informed Consent
In health care there are specific ethical standards that must be applied. One of the most
important ethical standard involved informed consent. Informed consent is fully explaining any
procedure, diagnosis, treatment, etc. and getting the patients express permission to perform this
healthcare approach. Informed consent is disclosing all appropriate information to the patient in
order to allow them the autonomy to decide. Even if a medical professional advises a patient they
need a particular surgery, treatment, or procedure the patient decides if they will in fact proceed
with this medical approach.
Informed consent from the legal and ethical right the patient has to direct what happens to
his or her body and from the ethical duty of the physician to involve the patient’s health care (De
Bord, 2014). The nurse plays a specific role in informed consent because they work closely with
the physician who will need to obtain informed consent from the patient. The physician will
inform the patient of the medical procedure or treatment they will require and explain in detail
what the procedure entail and the potential risks. Once the patient understands all the benefits
and the risks of the procedure they will give informed consent by signing a form expressing they
were properly informed.
Nurses work closely with doctors in caring for patients. This close relationship with
doctor results in the nurse also being fully aware of the patient’s private healthcare information.
While the physician is responsible for the informed consent process nurses work closely with
patients and are fully aware of the process. Despite the physician’s legal obligation to inform, the
patient will ask the nurse questions and engage them in the process. Nurses can use their
knowledge of the informed consent process to ensure the patient is comfortable with the decision
