In the TED video “Dare to Disagree,” Margaret Heffernan argues that people in society
and individual organizations often hold their views or hold off expressing their ideas due to fear
of conflict. Heffernan gives examples in the narrative to show how people can find change when
faced with opposition. In the example, Heffernan notes that collaboration between the statistician
and the doctor created conflict and realized that conflict could be useful when initiating change.
Usually, when we are faced with problems that require solutions, we think about change but do
not consider ways of introducing the change because we are afraid of the conflict that might
come up. Heffernan believes that people should introduce change by challenging the status quo.
In addition, Heffernan believes that people cannot readily learn these things, and
therefore it is important to educate people at a young age. Indeed, when people learn about the
importance of introducing conflict at a young age, they have a better chance of having better
career opportunities and improving their overall well-being. Heffernan argues that it is essential
to educate people from childhood through their adult lives to have a thinking organization and a
thinking society. Therefore, it is only through proper leadership that conflict arises and creativity
can be introduced to support change.
