Case Study 4 2
1. As we are revising the book, the coronavirus epidemic is disrupting normal life. What is
the impact of this disruption on carbon emission? What drives this impact?
With the onset of the coronavirus, a worldwide pandemic economies have been put to the
ultimate test. With the largely unsuccessful draconic lockdowns and restrictions of personal
freedoms individuals at least are using their private vehicles less. Of course, on the flip side is
that instead of having an few hundred offices filled with a work force of people and schools
filled with children using electricity and heat during the daytime, we now have millions and
millions of houses using these resources within their houses all day and night. These measures
caused significant alterations in different sectors, mainly transportation, industrial, residential
and public buildings, and power generation around the globe (Global Energy Review, n.d.).
As pointed out by Sikarwar, Reichert, Jeremias, and Manovic (2021) “So, there might be an
overall reduction of carbon emissions due to less commuter traffic and air traffic. COVID-19
enforced lockdowns led to temporary reduction in anthropogenic CO

emission” (p. 1). The true
impact of the coronavirus on carbon emissions would be an interesting study to determine
whether it was a net decrease or a net increase with emissions just being shifted from one source
to another i.e., from commuter traffic to commercial traffic and office buildings to individual
houses.

sustainability strategies? If so, how?

have little to do with each other. The concepts presented for supply chain risk management are
for mitigation of potential failures that not only can occur but are likely to occur which will
