Values Reflection Paper
Core values are the personal, moral beliefs of an individual. Values drive the behavior of the
individual and define their beliefs, actions, motivations, and desires. Every person has values
they develop over their lives that direct their behavior (Pavey, 2014). My core values consists of
following the law, doing what is right, and treating people how I would want to be treated, while
these values seem simple or just part of my core Christian beliefs, they are also something I have
learned overtime. While you are taught certain values when you are young and these values
become an important part of your personal beliefs, values also develop through personal, life
experiences.
I have always been a person who values rules. As a child of a military father rules have
always been an important part of a happy life. If everyone follows the rule or the law life goes
smoother for everyone. Following rules is a value because it helps to direct my behavior and how
I respond to others. Rules are useful for everyone and ensure a more equal society. When people
break the law or fail to follow the rules others become hurt even if the action is not purposeful. I
follow the rules to ensure I do not break the law or create any problems for anyone.
Secondly doing what is right is an important core value. When people do the right thing it
prevents harm from coming to others or minimizes the potential impact to that person. Doing the
right thing is not a clique but instead something very person must consider on their own and
address in the way they feel is best. Sometimes doing the right thing does not always end with no
one being negatively impacted but it is important. I firmly believe in karma and in order to avoid
negative consequences strive to do what is right. This value should be embraced by everyone in
society to ensure minimal harm comes to others.
