So far in this course, we have explored technology through the lenses
of history, the humanities, and the natural and applied sciences. In this
module, you will wrap up your draft of Final Project Part One with
Milestone Four, and the social sciences lens is the last piece of the
puzzle. Look back over the topics you chose to discuss in previous
discussions, select one, and reexamine it now through the social
sciences. In your initial post, address the following:
Describe or summarize your previous topic
How has your understanding been affected by the social sciences lens?
How does the social sciences lens support the lens you previously
used?
Hi everyone,
The topic I chose to reexamine through the lens of social science is from module three.
In that discussion, I talked about the role that social media plays in the dissemination of
information to the public regarding the current pandemic of coronavirus through the historical
lens. I discussed how the omnipresence of social media has saved countless lives by having
the ability to share information on the virus on a global scale. I compare that with the
pandemic of 1918, where the world obviously did not have social media and suffered a
tremendous amount of death during that time. On the flip side, any misinformation back then
would spread much slower and reach far fewer people, which is a drastic contrast to modern
times, when one falsity can reach millions of people in a matter of minutes.

Looking at social media’s role during this pandemic through the social science lens
offers new insights on the part social media plays. The coronavirus has brought upon the
world social distancing and isolation from those around us. However, social media has given
celebrities a new purpose for their platform to make videos for their millions of followers on
the importance of staying at home and staying away from public gatherings. It has also
inspired people to post about how they are dealing with being quarantine, giving others fresh
ideas about how to pass the time and keep boredom at bay. Social media has also coined a
new term called “panic buying” (Kushner, 2020) for people who run out to the store and hoard
common items. This has brought about a combination of people using social media to brag
about being a panic buyer and also as a way for others to shame the panic buyers.
My understanding and perspective has been slightly shifted when it comes to social
media through the social science lens during this rough time. I see all the good and positive
things that are brought to people everyday that are struggling through this. I see so many
fundraisers being set up to help people and those with means donating to those less fortune.
This level of giving has helped so many people with a negative outlook and those who are
struggling mentally to cope with the circumstances.
I feel that the social science lens supports the historical lens from the previous
discussion because of all the lives it is saving, literally and figuratively. The history lens
showed how a lack of useful information led to a high level of deaths in a previous pandemic
that was drastically cut down this time around by social media and the ability to spread
information to fast. Social media also allows for people to stay in front of others in a time
that many feel alone and isolated, ultimately improving their psychological states.
