Natural killer (peer response)
How are natural killer cells produced? Born to kill, natural killer cells were thought to travel straight
from the bone marrow, where they are manufactured, to the blood, circulating there and infiltrating
the sites of early tumors or infectious agents in the body. Their ability to destroy tumor and infected
cells is not present at birth. What do natural killer cells lack? Natural killer cells often lack antigen-
specific cell surface receptors, so are part of innate immunity, able to react immediately with no
prior exposure to the pathogen. And how many natural killer cells are made each day? The overall
production rate of NK cells was estimated to range between 6 and 25 (mean 15) × 106 cells/day
per litre of whole blood.
Basophils (peer response)
Basophils are a type of white blood cell. Like most types of white blood cells, basophils are
responsible for fighting fungal or bacterial infections and viruses. They are a granulocyte cell,
which means that they release granules of enzymes to fight against harmful bacteria and germs.
But what makes basophil unique? Basophil, type of white blood cell (leukocyte) that is
characterized histologically by its ability to be stained by basic dyes and functionally by its role in
mediating hypersensitivity reactions of the immune system. What are basophils made of?
Basophils are granulocytes. This group of white blood cell contains granules full of enzymes.
These enzymes are released if an infection is detected and if an allergic reaction or asthma attack
takes place. They originate and mature in the bone marrow.
