Skills for Academic Writing
Question One
The class has equipped the students with essential skills necessary for academic writing,
which can help improve the quality of work and boost overall performance. Some critical skills
learned include time management, clarity, consistency, correct grammar, spelling, and
punctuation. These skills are discussed below.
Clarity and Consistency
Clarity refers to the lucidity and clearness that determine understanding perception.
Academic work with clarity and consistency proves to the examiner or the reader that the student
understood well what was being discussed and was able to break the main ideas into sub-ideas.
Such work is free from ambiguity and indistinctness, and points are well researched, explained
and relevant examples provided where necessary. Additionally, such work is precise and
transparent, meaning that the student did not copy from any source but instead researched and
composed the original work.
Grammar, Punctuations, and Spelling
However well-developed points and flow of work may be, with well researched scientific
arguments and reasons, should such a work lack proper integration between its flow and the facts
developed, the reader's attention may be diverted. Good grammar, punctuation, and spelling
motivate the leaders to read through any work. If the language used is atrocious, the reader will
pay no attention to such work, and if graded, points earned are below average (Yu, 2021). Good
grammar, punctuations, and spelling should therefore accompany good scientific arguments for a
high score.
