Fetal Abnormality Case Study
1. What is the Christian view of the nature of human persons, and which theory of
moral status is it compatible with? How is this related to the intrinsic human
value and dignity?
According to the Christian view, God created humans being in his own image,
unlike other living things. Furthermore, every human is made up of the body and the
spirit, which must be respected. Since God is love, and all humans are created in his
image, then all humans are required to demonstrate love to each other and develop
relationships on a foundation of love (Beckwith, & Thornton, 2020). Therefore, all
humans should strive to love one another, and no one should take the life of another.
Life starts and conception. This perspective means that a fetus has body and spirit.
Since Christians are obligated to love one another, this love should be extended to a
fetus as it has the essential intrinsic characteristics of humans.
The theory of cognitive properties can explain the moral status of human beings.
This theory suggests that the moral status of human beings is determined by awareness
and properties such as perception, memory, and understanding (Zwitter, 2019). This
theory suggests any human that lacks understanding, memory, and perception has no
moral value or status. Thus any living being that has cognitive properties has moral
status. This theory relates to human value and dignity in that all living beings. This is
because since human beings have mental properties, they have moral status.
Furthermore, based on Christian values, human life must be respected.
