Chronic diseases include heart attack, cancer, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. As of 2012, half of the population that is 117 million people had one or more chronic condition (CDC, 2016). The diseases are very costly but can be prevented. In this paper, I will discuss the common causes of chronic diseases, examine the components of prevention effectiveness and effective and successful preventive efforts for diabetes. Four common causes of chronic diseases Physical inactivity Lack of exercise is a significant cause of chronic conditions. Inactivity is indicated by prolonged sitting or lack of movement. Prolonged sitting increases a person’s chances of getting lung cancer by 50%, uterine cancer risk is 66%, and colon cancer increased by 30%. By standing the muscular and cellular systems that process sugar and cholesterol are active. Insulin influences the systems, and exercises improve insulin receptor sensitivity which lowers insulin resistance. Long sitting, for instance, eight hours a day has been proven to increase an individual risk of getting type 2 diabetes by 90 percent.
