Special Issues with Vulnerable Adults and the Elderly Institution Affiliation Date Introduction  Elderly abuse is defined as the use of conscious and unconscious acts to cause harm to dependent elderly people.  This is a problem that has considerable increase in the last decade.  The number of cases have considerably risen despite the problem not being well discussed.  This presentation addresses the various factors under elderly abuse. Substance Use  Substance use is regarded to be the continued use of a certain drug.  This is a process that leads to substance used disorder.  This is a condition where use of a substance leads to major clinical impairment.  This is a process that can be seen largely among the elderly. Physical Consequence of Substance use Disorders  There are many consequences that can be found to come from substance use.  One of the most negative is physical dependence.  This can be seen when a person suffers as a result of withdrawal of a substance.  The substance may vary and the different drugs used may have different effects.
