Running head: FIBROMYALGIA 1 Fibromyalgia Institution Affiliation Date FIBROMYALGIA 2 Introduction Fibromyalgia is a chronical medical condition characterized by fatigue and widespread severe pain in many parts of the body. The pain transgresses to sleep problems, memory troubles, bladder complications, restless legs, numbness and sensitivity to light, noise, and temperature (Clauw, 2014). This illness is more common in women than men and generates from a combination of environmental and genetic factors. The cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, however, the condition commonly results from physical trauma related to previous injury or a serious emotional stress or an infection. It is mostly linked to anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder caused by pain resulting from the central nervous system processes. Common Signs and Symptoms The major symptom of fibromyalgia is a widespread pain; however, there are more symptoms which change depending on weather changes, stress levels and physical activity of the individual. Continuous pain is experienced in most body parts, mainly on the back and neck, a burning sensation, an ache or a sharp stabbing pain (Clauw, 2014). Muscle stiffness, lack of sleep and extreme tiredness is also a sign of fibromyalgia in many patients. Some patients have extreme sensitivity even to the slightest touch, described as allodynia or sensitivity to some foods, smoke, and bright lighting.
