Historical Development of CSR and its Roles in MNE
Corporate Social Responsibility is a form of a self-regulation integrated into a business
which functions as a self-regulatory mechanism to comply with the law. It is also a business
approach by which an organization takes into account the manner in which its activities may
impact upon different stakeholders (Patricia et al.). This makes the company bring positive impact
to the environment and the stakeholders. CSR helps companies to avoid pollution to the society
and bring out good public relations. A company has responsibility towards the community and and
the environment in which it operates. This happens through their waste and pollution reduction
processes, contributing educational and social programs and earning adequate returns on the
employed resources.
Although CSR has no single definition, a concern with this notion has existed in centuries.
Corporate Social Responsibility dates from the Code of Hammurabi in Babylon millennia ago. It
has evolved as seen in different guidelines of companies in their social reporting. CSR in many
firms is moving towards full integration with strategic management and corporate governance.
Corporate Social Responsibility has developed over years like in 1950s it focused on

interests and became more responsive to their stakeholders. CSR became universally approved in
1990s while in 2000s it became definitively an important strategic issue.
Corporate Social Responsibility is also applied in Multinational Enterprise (MNE) along a
global production. It helps in the legal approach in ownership of businesses. CSR broadens
responsibility and linkages. Adopting a social network perspective to examine international
production. Corporate social responsibility helps international companies to be environmental
friendly and reduces negative effect to the community and shareholders. The responsibility is
determined by whether indirect partners are exclusive or non-exclusive. Global factory systems
amplify linkages and interactions leading to increase in corporate social responsibility when
viewed from social network perspective. The development of the multinational enterprises adds to
the understanding of CSR.
The corporate social responsibility is more a function of public relations because it’s all
about the relationship of a company and its surroundings. For a company to work well must have
a good relation with its stakeholders and the society. Practitioners of public relations discuss
business performance internally and externally and they help organizations set standards and
implement them.
Multinational enterprises respond to the public opinions by adhering to the CSR rules like
paying taxes which vary from country to country. They must provide a good relationship to the
public.
In conclusion, Corporate Social Responsibility help companies avoid pollution and run for
the better of every member of the society and its stakeholders and all multinational enterprises
must adhere to them to have good public relations.
