RUNING HEAD; Elizabeth and Hazel
The story, Elizabeth and Hazel is a story that was born from a photograph taken outside
of Little Rock Central High School on September 4 of 1957 that was taken by a 26-year-old Will
Counts, a Central graduate, the resultant photograph quickly became one of the most
ineradicable images of the civil-rights era. Documentaries on the Nine African-American
students ends where David Margolick’s impending book, Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of
Little Rock, starts. Beginning with the photograph, the book’s scope grows greater and greater
until it resolves on the intricate relationship that developed between Elizabeth and Hazel.
This story led to a surge of civil rights movements in the United States. In the case of being a
symbolic of contemporary race relations in the United States, the story revealed the level of
racism that had curbed the country at that time of the century.
This picture aroused several reactions, all which were directed to the anger in Hazels, face. A
teenage girl, who was angry about a black girl, Elizabeth being admitted to her school. The story
represented white recalcitrance for nearly the half a century. I believe that the story is not a
representative of the structures of power at work today but an event of white recalcitrance that
affected the lives of two girls who were of different races and backgrounds. These girls were
victims of the racial discrimination that was dominant in the United States in the last century.
Some individuals will view this story as an anomaly, a thing of the past but this is not the case.
The story is an historical emblem of the racial segregation during the past century. A vital
historical event that helped shape the life of Hazel, despite Elizabeth’s hard life after the
photograph was taken. Later on, Hazel became remorseful of her actions that day and later on
builds a friendship with Elizabeth while working on their differences.
