On August 5,201, there was a collapse of a massive heavy rock which caved in blocking
the primary path to tunnels in the San Jose gold and copper mine located in Atacama Desert, Chile.
The Chilean government exhibited leadership and remarkable communications as well as public
relations as it tried to free 33 miners that had been confined underground after more than two
months (Rashid et al 2013). The way the ordeal handled was an excellent reference to the disaster
of BP spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Various lessons on disaster management are acquired
from the ordeal. Additionally, the leadership displayed by the team leaders of the rescue team that
evicted the victims depicting the excellent leadership styles that can be utilized in other
catastrophic disasters or risks. The entailed leadership decisions made were notably tricky since
devastating risks are high impact events with a low probability of happening.
The team’s leadership involved in the rescue demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a
situation that was risky and time sensitive as the authorities presented it. The team was able to
show resilience by innovating as the second shaft utilizing an advanced air-powered drill best for
the rock type in the area finally reached the miners. The success of the second shaft demonstrated
the flexibility of the team as they had never done such an extreme experiment. By attempting
various things simultaneously, there were elevated probabilities of success. The flexibility of the
team was exhibited by the teams ability to use different drilling plans simultaneously. It included
plan A, B, and C. Plan A was more efficient but was much sluggish for relief, plan B had the
prospective for quick corrections but had untested technology while plan C presented higher speed
with less accuracy than appeared important. Meanwhile the trapped miners deep underground
opposed the psychological and physical survival hardships.
The path-goal model of leadership is a leadership theory that best fits the work environment
and the employee towards the achievement of a particular goal. Its goal is to encourage employees
