PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY 2
Psychological Theory
In the last week of September, an incident occurred in the United States of America
where a man, Stephen paddock got involved in an animalistic killing. Stephen paddock was a
wealthy accountant who was known by his family and friends to be innocent and good-hearted.
To their surprise, this man used a series of automatic weapons to gun down innocent citizens
who were attending a certain concert. Owing to the distinguished history of the killer, his action
is deemed to be psychological. This paper attempts to explain how psychological theory applies
to this kind of killing.
With regards to his family history, paddock's father was a bank robber who featured in
the FBI'S most wanted list. According to psychological theory, this in itself is a risk factor.
Adding onto this, paddock was risk-prone, and this is evident in his passion for gambling.
Similarly, this could have contributed to his successful entrepreneurship. Psychological theories
assert that risk takers and psychopaths are under the same category. When psychopaths are
anxious or depressed, they do things without reasoning. In common cases, such activities involve
the destruction of property or even termination of lives as in the case of Stephen paddock. In this
state, they perceive fellow human beings as threats and would want to eliminate them, the reason
for killings. (Michie et al., 2005) Before this incident, paddock's girlfriend confessed to the
authorities that at times, he would scream randomly, moreover, his doctor had prescribed him
anti-anxiety drugs. He was also seen berating his girlfriend in public on certain occasions. These
are all signs that paddock was a psychopath according to psychological theories. Therefore,
psychological theories could be used to explain his animalistic action.
