Defining Groups
Our principles make us who we are. Human beings including you and me develop
different behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values in the course of life. The families we come
from, friends we make, the experiences we encounter and the community we work and live in
facilitate great contributions of who we are and our view on the world in our senses.
By use of different defining reference groups, we meet people with different kinds of
behavior, attitude, values, and beliefs. We end up comparing ourselves in such groups and after
the comparison is when we make up our minds on whether we can or cannot join the team. In
most cases, we depend on the groups to shape and even alter our behavior, attitude, values, and
beliefs. However, the influence is direct or indirect because we evaluate with what is worthy,
appropriate and desirable in comparison with our likes, dislikes and what we want to achieve
(Crossman, 2017).
In my case, I engage various reference groups in shaping my world. For instance, one of
my primary reference groups is the group that I work with in dance. Acts Dance Crew,' makes
me feel different as we work out our dance moves. I get the morale of acting in greatness
because of the positive behaviors, beliefs, values, and attitude I gain from the group. Another
type of reference group that I acknowledge to have helped me create a world of Hope and Faith
is ‘Mind Valley Academy.' This inspirational reference group created a platform for gaining
knowledge which we do not achieve in school or at home. This group, which I access online,
goes beyond career education and uses programs featuring teachers who help in psychological,
emotional, physical and spiritual productivity (Mind Valley Academy, 2017). By associating
