RACE, ETHNICITY, AND REPRESENTATION 2
Race, Ethnicity, and Representation
Culture, ethnicity, and race do not only refer to the physical attribute of people but also
indicate the ways of understanding and seeing people in the diversity of the world (James, 2003).
The stereotypes that are related to these facets have been clearly evident in various situations by
the majority of individuals, some of which have remained to be taken as a belief.
These systems of belief about typical characteristics, behaviors or perceptions of how some
people either different because of culture, race or ethnicity have ended up creating cultural norms
as well as the social status of the same. In America, the whites are perceived to be superior figures
than the other races. This is evident business wise where the whites are taken and believed to be
key and perfect business people. On the other hand, the blacks (African-American) are perceived
to be inferior basically associated with poverty, low positions in work and also servants of the
white.
These stereotypes have been evident and spread through the media. In most films, even in
those that have young characters, the whites associated given of being helpful and upholding good
morals. Latinos are often associated with love matters while the Arabs are associated with
terrorism. This is the same perception that has spread in the entire world.
I once took a bus as I went to visit one of my distant relatives. Along the way, an Arab
woman entered the bus holding a luggage that was wrapped in a white cloth and sat at the back
seat. As we went on she kept moving from one to seat to the other. The silence in the bus could
tell that all was not well. I personally alighted before reaching my destination along with some few
others I guess. The perception that Arabs are terrorists was the main reason I did it.
