BASIC STATISTICS 2
Phase 1 Basic Statistics
Introduction of scenario and dataset
The NCLEX Memorial Hospital has observed an increase in number of patients admitted
in the hospital because of infectious disease. As a healthcare expert, the purpose is to recover and
uphold the well-being of people in different settings. A spreadsheet about the status of 60
patients is provided with the status of disease and age. The three variables are Client number,
Infection Disease Status and Age of the patient. The qualitative variable is infectious disease
status, and qualitative variables are patient number and age. The age variable is continuous
because it covers an age range from 35 years to 76 years. The patient number is the ratio level of
measurement, infectious disease is the nominal level of measurement and age is the nominal
level of measurement. (“Data Levels of Measurement”, n.d.)
The Measures of Center and the Measures of Variation
The measure of center is the value at the center of the dataset. The methods are mean,
median, and mode. The measure of variation is the value dispersed or spread from the center.
The variation is also known as dispersion. The methods are the range, variance, standard
deviation, and quartile deviation.
Calculation of measure of center and the measure of variation
1. Mean: It is the sum of all observations divided by a number of observations. In short,
it is the average of numbers given. The mean age of the data set is 61.8 years or 62
years (3709/60).
