AMERICAN DREAM 2
James Truslow Adams is a renowned man as he is remembered for coming up with the idea
of the American Dream. In one of his books, Adams calls the American Dream an opportunity
one where everyone can live a rich life, where opportunities abound, and barriers of the past
aren’t hampering progress. Throughout the years, that dream changed to a house in the suburbs, a
white picket fence, 2.5 children, and a dog. The idea was that you could have this quaint little
family, a well-paying job, and life would be good. That dream brings about memories of
something that has long since gone away.
The American Dream is still exists but in new and different forms. Many suggest that the dream
is dead or at least out of reach for most Americans today. The American Dream is that every
woman or man, despite of their background, can change their circumstances and rise as high as
they are willing to work. But it has changed dramatically over time and its meaning has also
changed.
The American Dream vary based on the following:
The American dream on race. Race is a significant predictor of one’s perception in attaining
the American Dream. Whites had consistent the lower odds in attaining the American Dream
when compared to Blacks. This supports findings by Hortchids qualitative study in which she
found that Blacks, while being historically disadvantaged, believed in the dream with an
intensity not found in Whites. Whites, having a higher degree of wealth and mobility to start,
may feel that it is harder to for them to improve their standard of living when compared to
Blacks due to higher Stratification, thereby coming into conflict with what the literature states,
which is that Whites should indeed have greater odds, when in reality they do not.
