IS HEALTH CARE A RIGHT 2
Is Health care a Right?
In my opinion, health care is not a right. This is due to the fact that it is not stipulated in
the universal declaration of human rights as one of the rights entitled to citizens. Additionally, I
believe that a right pertains to aspects that a state has control over, and can deny, or limit its
citizen’s access to. In contradistinction, healthcare is within the individual’s control, and a state
cannot determine the type of health you have. Due to this individualistic nature of health,
individuals in a country should pay for their own health care services, and not the government
(Hoffman, 2013). In case health care is made a right, the federal government might experience a
multitude of problems. The primary one of these would be with regards to fund allocation, and
acquisition. Maruthappu, Ologunde, and Gunarajasingam note this quagmire in their analysis of
the legitimacy of healthcare as a right (Maruthappu, Ologunde, & Gunarajasingam, 2012). In fact,
it would be a nightmare deciding who gets what share of the money allotted to the right, the cancer
patients, flu patients, or the disabled? Due to lack of a uniform structure to address these issues,
healthcare is best treated as a predominantly individual responsibility. Almgren notes that even in
the case of Obamacare, the act has fallen short of providing universal health care due to the inherent
challenges (Almgren, 2017).
