1. Definition of psychology
In the box below, describe your understanding of the definition of psychology provided in
the Coon and Mitterer textbook or other credible professional source. Compare and
contrast your interviewees’ statements with the definition of psychology. How are the
interviewees’ descriptions similar and different from the definition of psychology? Include
any major misconceptions your subjects may have about psychology and psychologists
based on what they shared during their interviews.
Psychology is the scientific study of both behavior and the mind including all the aspects of
consciousness and unconsciousness including thought.
The first respondent’s definition is partially correct in that she talks about mind study and
scientific and artistic study of it. The respondent however, does not include the reason why
psychology is studied. This would have given her statement a better meaning
The second respondent’s response is somehow off the mark because psychology is not just
the study of the behaviour but rather the study of the mind.
The third respondent is correct in his definition since he goes beyond merely mentioning
the fact that psychology explains the behaviour of human beings but gives us the reason
why this is done.
2. Four goals of psychology
In the box below, identify and describe your understanding of each of the four goals of
psychology. Describe how your subjectsperceptions of psychology and psychologists
relate to each of the four goals of psychology as described in the Coon and Mitterer
textbook.
1) To Describe
This goal simply involves describing the behavior of human beings. This
description is designed to enable us describe what is considered normal and what
is considered abnormal.
This perception relate to the description in the book in the sense the
psychologists use natural behaviour and correlation studies to study the
psychology of human beings.
