Research question
The research question, in this case, is how difficulties in realizing the essence of incompetence’s
lead to inflated self-assessment cases.
Literature review
One of the cases which is given to illustrate the situation is the case of Mr. Wheeler who
had stolen a bank with the pretext of using lemon juice to make him invisible to the CCTV
cameras. It is clear when making decisions that people rely on the knowledge they have to make
the right choices. Second, it is important to understand the fact that people differ in the
knowledge and the strategies they use to make decisions (Kruger et al n.p.). When looking at Mr.
Wheeler decision one can identify that he used the wrong strategies and also the knowledge
which he applied was dysfunctional at the end. The third and a unique thinking are that when
people use inferior strategies when making some of the decisions in life, they end up suffering
the burden which is presented (Kruger et al n.p.). The incompetence’s decision they make rob
them of the knowledge, satisfaction and also the success which they would want to make at the
end. It is something that these people fail to recognize and thus end up in the wrong place at the
end.

Method
The study involved 65 participants who were sourced from Cornell University. They
were undertaking various carouse which was related to psychology. In this case, the method
which was used is questionnaires were 30 items were used. The question s were related to the
jokes which were sourced from Woody Allen (Kruger et al n.p.). The questionnaire was a simple
one as they had their task of only rating the jokes as they were presented. The participants were
supposed to rate the joke on the scale of 11 from what they found to be funny at the end of the
process. Nothing more was expected in the case. Another 45 were used to analyze their course
grade.
Results
The first result is that 66% if the participants were able to tell what was funny but this
was not the main question which the research was looking for. When trying to look for the
participant who was incompetent in analyzing the joke only 12% of them indeed were qualified
to identify the jokes, but they had expressed a 58% qualification. With this, it meant that most of
the participants were not in the position of identifying the perfect joke which would be used in
the case (Kruger et al n.p.). One of the thing that was concluded is that just like beauty the job or
the fun of a joke likes on the person who is feeling the joke. With this, the element of ambiguity
was created as one joke can be aligned with an individual while the same might not to another
person. It was found that about 15% of the 45 were incompetent in one way or another when it
comes to their course grade.
