1) The initial prompt states “the fact that some businesses now promote their ability to help people
‘expand their minds beyond virtual reality’ shows the greater progress psychology has made lately.’ This
statement must be considered regarding professional psychology and pseudo-psychology. What is the
difference between professional and pseudo psychology? Professional psychology practices integrity,
reliability, and validity whereas pseudo psychology does not. Pseudo psychology is not verifiable it is
not scientific in nature it cannot be proven or disproven. It is merely conjectural. Professional
psychology is quantitative or qualitative in value. It is measurable. The expansion of the mind or internal
psyche was described by various psychologists including BF Skinner who described behaviorism in
human beings through operant conditioning experiment performed which echoed Pavlov’s experiments
with Golden Retrievers. BF Skinner researched mentalism and how the inner emotions react to outside
stimuli. The prompt discusses the fact that some businesses now promote their ability to help people
expand their minds beyond virtual reality which BF Skinner would probably be fascinated with. BF
Skinner would argue however that this does not necessarily show progression in psychology but merely
new excavation towards uncovering truth. This prompt is not necessarily pseudo-psychology because it
can be approached from operant learning theories. Perhaps when outgoing, energetic music is played
while people are learning about a certain business it will draw the audience in to experience a greater
virtual reality. There are many variables influencing this discussion prompt yet according to BF Skinner it
certainly would involve professional psychology in nature. Inner psyche expansion is measurable both
quantitatively and qualitatively so the argument stands that this prompt would in fact be addressing a
professional claim of psychology. If this claim is in fact measurable and the measurements can be
compared using reliable and valuable meaning then the prompt should be addressed using
professional psychological techniques.
2) From a social worker’s perspective if one had a caseload of clients from diverse cultures, ethnicities,
and races understanding their diverse backgrounds when interacting with them and when assisting
them with identifying and obtaining social services is crucial. How can you help someone if you do not
understand where they are coming from? Culture, ethnicity, and race are different terms with separate
meanings. Culture might best be defined as the superficial group variabilities. Culture serves as a
method to label different people groups. It is an abstract term cultural values might include food,
fashion, and music. Ethnicity is defined as the sense of belonging in a cultural group similarities are
shared such as physical factors, linguistic characteristics, behaviorisms, and environmental qualities.
Finally, the term race is a term applied to people based on physical appearance and genetic makeup.
Recognizing the differences between these three terms is key to aiding the caseload of clients from
diverse backgrounds. A social worker is integral to society by providing help for families and protection
for children. Social workers are pivotal to society yet must be professional at all times to better aid
humanity as a whole. In order for a social worker to best do his or her job it is necessary to recognize
diversity and not be hindered by different backgrounds. It is important to embrace differences and
encourage families seeking social services to value self and personal heritage. In fact every professional
person should understand diversity when interacting and assisting others. Through positive
communication and kindness more can be accomplished in the field of social work. Understanding
diverse backgrounds is key to promoting better interactions with people of different cultural, ethnic, and
racial backgrounds as a social worker.
