Essay one - Characters in the story
The Lord of the Flies is a novel that was written by Golding William. It mainly focuses on a
group of boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and their catastrophic attempt to govern
themselves. The book has been widely read. It was named one of the 100 best novels. The novel
was adapted into a film by Peter Brook in 1963 and in 1990 by Hook Harry (Golding, 2013).
Characters analysis
Ralph
In the novel, Ralph is depicted as a competent leader. He is also portrayed as a civilized and
properly socialized young man. He is charismatic, attractive and decently intelligent. Ralph is
used by the author to demonstrate common sense. For instance, he is the one who makes the fire,
conceives meeting place and the huts. He applies and synthesizes Piggy’s intellectualism. He is
also the one who recognizes superstitions and false fears as obstructions and blockages to their
survival in the Island. The author portrays his as a natural and diplomatic leader, (Golding,
2013).
Ralph is also portrayed as a talented and skilled leader. For instance, during the calamity caused
by sight of a dead paratrooper in the Island, he is able to process with both caution and sense. He
works diligently to keep the other boys focused and determined. He also takes lead in
investigating the castle rock despite his fear of beasts. The author also depicts him as polite and
calm boy. For instance, when Simon mutters that he does not believe in the beasts, Ralph
answers him respectfully.
