Development of a new superior product
Introduction
Product development is a process that takes into consideration a lot of business dynamics
especially in a competitive environment. Introduction of a new product into a particular market
requires an analytical approach in determining what the market entails, the demographic aspect
as well as other external factors that might affect a product’s performance (Sekaran, & Bougie).
This paper focuses on product development processes and the scientific approach that is useful in
this undertaking. The Kano model was instrumental in this process of establishing and
developing a product in a competitive environment.
The Kano Model
This is a product development and customer satisfaction theory whose emphasis is on the
contentment of the customers and according to their preferences. These customer preferences
have been categorized into five categories, each addressing a specific need of the customers in a
particular market segment (Stark 2015). These choices include one-dimensional quality,
attractive quality, reverse quality, indifferent quality and must-be quality. Any quality product or
service has very high chances of evenly competing in a competitive market, unlike those
products or services that are of poor quality (Sekaran, & Bougie). Competition is meant to
improve the quality of all stakeholders’ lives, and therefore, it should be highly encouraged.
One-dimensional quality
This form of preferences focuses on taking one side of either being satisfied or not
satisfied. Your needs can either be fulfilled or not but not both at the same time. One-
dimensional quality is based on performance (Sekaran, & Bougie). Attributes of production are
used as the metrics on which business owners base their desires. Their business strategies,
