WORKFORCE SHORTAGES 2
Workforce shortages
Introduction
Workforce shortages in healthcare facilities have a significant impact on the quality of
services provided. As a result, hospitals should always ensure that they have sufficient
employees to perform the different job roles that will finally lead to the success of the facility in
the long term. Most of the American hospitals have suffered losses of patients where there was
insufficient workforce (Auerbach, Buerhaus, & Staiger & 2009). Also, the lack of adequate
employees leads to the deterioration of the quality of services provided, and this also makes it
hard for the hospitals to assist the patients. As a result, the issue of insufficient workers in
healthcare facilities has major adverse impacts on the patients as they do not receive quality
services that would quicken their recovery.
Description of the facility
Berrien County Hospital is a medium-sized hospital in Georgia and operates to serve the
best of the people in the society. However, the hospital has some challenges including a limited
workforce which leads to delivery of poor quality services. On the other hand, the facility has
suffered from the loss of patients due to a reduced number of the patients. The hospital has 148
beds, and in most times of the year, they are fully occupied. However, the number of nurses and
doctors does not meet the demands especially in the emergency department (Institute of
Medicine (U.S.). & Page, 2004). The hospital does not adequately address the needs of the
patients since the number increases, and doctors become overwhelmed. As a result, the hospital
does not have the opportunity and capacity to handle the different diseases and emergencies.
