Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the ability to think in an organized and a reasonable way welcoming
new information to achieve great nursing practice and proper patient care. It is significant not
only for nurse practice but also in making concrete policies. Critical thinking includes one’s own
attributes, abilities and self-management, intellectual skills and technical skills. It is applied in
clinical practice in different ways to enhance clinical competence.
In the clinical aspect, critical thinking is applied in decision making, conducting research
and clinical grasp. Critical thinking is used in solving issues that a clinical officer may face in his
line of work. This is achieved by the nurse getting information of the problem, defines its nature
and gives possible remedies. (Papathanassiou. V, Kleisiaris F., and others 2014). It can also be
used in sharpening one’s intuition and perception. Intuition is the ability of the nurse recognizing
the issue a patient has that cannot be expressed verbally. Perception relates to the nurse’s ability
to make a pattern of the patient’s history using his or her own experience. It is common with the
expert nurse.
Critical thinking also aids the nurse to rely on different sources of scientific evidence, the
patient’s medical history and their response to treatment, the patients current status and come up
with the best remedy. It discourages a fixated mindset. (Benner P., Hughes R. and Stuphen M).
For example, a nurse having a patient who got her leg amputated and is facing excruciating pain
and the current painkillers she is on do not seem to help, she can use her experience to administer
quality patient care to this patient. The nurse will consult with a more qualified medical
practitioner to be certain. In another case, a nurse having an alcoholic patient may use her critical
thinking skills to help the patient medically.
