From the review of the article "Filling in around the edges" it clear that many employer-
sponsored benefits are available today that may help organization recruit and retain their
employees. This paper will aim at designing benefit plans, that will have voluntary, supplemental
and others benefits based on the needs of the employees in the organization as well as the
financial capability of the company the company that will be examined in Starbucks Company.
Starbucks is an American company that deals with beverage and it was founded in the
year 1971 in Seattle, Washington. The company has opened over 24,000 stores in about 70
countries where in the United States they have 13,172 locations with a total of 238,000. The
company operates in energy and the beverage industry which very competitive and uses
employees as its part of competitive advantages, therefore, the company should consider
designing an employer-sponsored plan that will help to recruit and retain its workers (Schultz,
2012).
The company should consider implementing the following plan benefits. First, there
should be a voluntary plan which will cater for dental care, cancer, and vision policies. This
would be beneficial to the employees since it will supplement their ordinary medical cover.
Secondly, the company may consider giving its employees long-term care after they retire and
this would help to retain them in the company as well as for young employees they may offer
them college saving plan. Lastly, other benefits that the company may include discounted
vacation travel and computer purchasing plans (Atkinson, 2009).
Long-term care plans and discounted vocational travel policies seem to be optimal for the
company seems they will motivate employees to work and remain in the organization and they
